India’s Navy endangered by substandard defense technology: report

Corruption within the Indian Navy's procurement process is also implicated

The vulnerability of the Indian Navy due to its underdeveloped defense technology has been increasingly exposed over the last decade. The report cites 15 major accidents in the past decade, underscoring serious concerns about the country’s naval capabilities.

Among the incidents mentioned is the 2014 fire on the INS Sindhuratna, resulting in two fatalities. The report also points to the INS Arihant, India’s first nuclear submarine, which was rendered inoperable for ten months due to an accident that raised pollution concerns. Furthermore, a three-year delay in the construction of the INS Ari Ghat raises questions about India’s technological proficiency.

Corruption within the Indian Navy’s procurement process is also implicated. The report cites instances of kickbacks in arms deals (2006) and irregularities in a 2013 torpedo contract, both impacting the quality of naval equipment. The use of substandard materials in nuclear technology has also led to environmental damage and increased the risk of underwater nuclear accidents.

The report contrasts India’s billions of rupees spent on nuclear submarines with the fact that 140 million people live below the poverty line. This raises ethical questions about prioritizing military expansion over social and environmental needs.

To mitigate these risks, the report suggests that South Asian countries should focus on maritime safety and environmental protection. This requires regular audits, robust accountability mechanisms, and collaboration with international organizations like the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) for nuclear safety oversight.
