FBR takes U-turn on ban on bringing two mobile phones, more than $1,200 into Pakistan

FBR's chairman has asked for restrictions to be withdrawn

The chairman of the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has suspended the implementation of proposed amendments to the Customs baggage rules of 2006, effectively halting a newly imposed ban on bringing more than one mobile phone into the country.

Aaj News reported that the chairman has ordered the withdrawal of the proposed amendments.

Sources indicate that under the existing 2006 rules, travelers are permitted to bring in two mobile phones.

The FBR chairman also rescinded the proposed ban on commercial imports exceeding $1200, directing that the proposed amendments be withdrawn and reconsidered through consultation before resubmission.

On Monday, the FBR issued a notification detailing amendments to the baggage scheme, which included a complete ban on bringing commercial quantities of goods into the country and a restriction allowing only one mobile phone for personal use. This decision has now been reversed pending further review.
