The Cybercrime Wing of the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) in Karachi has initiated its first case concerning the dissemination of fake news.

The case was filed under the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA) for spreading false information during a Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) protest in November. The individual named in the First Information Report (FIR) is Said Ur Rehman, a resident of Gulshan-e-Iqbal Block 1, though no arrests have been made yet.

According to the FIR, authorities received a tip about a Facebook account named Saif Ur Rehman, which was allegedly engaged in propaganda against the state and its institutions. The account reportedly shared false information and used derogatory language towards the government.

A technical analysis of related X activity confirmed that the account had been actively promoting anti-state sentiments, with multiple posts designed to incite public animosity towards respected institutions.

Evidence gathered indicated that Said Ur Rehman was operating the Facebook account under the name Saif Ur Rehman, aiming to tarnish the reputation of Pakistan’s institutions by posting fake news. His actions are considered offenses under sections 9, 10, and 20 of PECA 2016, along with Section 505 of the Pakistan Penal Code.
