Prominent Australian broadcaster and former Wallabies coach Alan Jones has been charged with a series of alleged historical sex crimes following an investigation by police.

The 83-year-old, a well-known figure in Australia, was arrested on Monday at his luxury Sydney Harbour apartment while detectives executed a search warrant.

Jones faces 24 charges involving eight alleged victims, with accusations spanning from 2001 to 2019. Among the charges are 11 counts of aggravated indecent assault related to individuals who had been employed by him.

New South Wales Police indicated that the youngest victim was just 17 years old at the time of the alleged offences.

The broadcaster has previously denied allegations of indecent assault that emerged in the Sydney Morning Herald late last year.

He gained fame as the coach of the national rugby team in the 1980s, leading the Wallabies to a historic “grand slam” victory over the UK nations.

His influence as a radio talk show host solidified his status, making him one of the most powerful voices in Australian media.

Despite his achievements, Jones has also faced controversy, including instances of inciting hatred, which has drawn criticism over the years.

He retired from his radio show in 2020 and has made several unsuccessful attempts to enter politics.
