Punjab successfully implements artificial rain using local technology
The Punjab government has successfully conducted an experiment using local technology to create artificial rain, aimed at alleviating the severe smog affecting the region.
This cloud seeding operation took place in Jhelum, Gujar Khan, Chakwal, and Talagang, resulting in rainfall in Jhelum and Gujar Khan within hours.
The project was a collaborative effort involving the Punjab government, experts from the Pakistan Army’s Scientific Research and Development division, Army Aviation, the Pak Arab Refinery Limited (PARCO), and the Environmental Protection Agency. Their combined expertise and advanced technology facilitated this successful trial.
The initiative is intended to combat the significant smog that has drastically reduced visibility in Lahore, Multan, and other areas of Punjab, heightening the risk of respiratory illnesses and leading to school closures and other restrictions.
Lahore, which is home to approximately 14 million people and is surrounded by factories, frequently ranks among the world’s most polluted cities, and this month has seen record pollution levels.
Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif praised the scientific community and all involved institutions for the success of the artificial rain project, stating it would pave the way for future technological advancements in Pakistan and help address weather-related challenges for its citizens. Read more
Smog: Punjab reviews lockdown measures, plans artificial rain next week
First ever artificial rain induced in Lahore today to combat smog
In light of the toxic smog, Punjab has declared a health emergency, enforcing a ban on construction activities, extending school closures, and transitioning universities to online classes.
Meanwhile, many residents have participated in “Namaz-e-Istisqa,” a special prayer for rain, seeking divine intervention to alleviate the hazardous conditions caused by the smog.
As Punjab grapples with worsening air quality, officials attribute this year’s severe pollution to a lack of rainfall in previous months.
The government is implementing further measures, including the closure of construction sites and industrial operations in Lahore and Multan, with a potential three-day lockdown looming if conditions do not improve.
