Smog and fog: Motorway M1 and M2 closure updates

The update was issued around 11 am

The M-1 motorway, connecting Islamabad and Peshawar, and the M-2 motorway, connecting Lahore to Islamabad has reopened to all traffic following a reduction in fog density, motorway police said on Monday morning.

The update about Motorways reopening for traffic was issued on Monday around 11 am.

Thick fog and smog have severely impacted intercity traffic. A spokesperson for the Motorway had announced on Sunday that several routes are closed to all vehicles, including Motorway M2 from Lahore to Bhera, M3 from Lahore to Darkhana, M4 from Pindi Bhattian to Multan, M5 from Multan to Sukkur, and M11 from Lahore to Sialkot.

The Motorway police have urged drivers to reduce their speed and use fog lights. They also advised the public to stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel. Additionally, low visibility due to fog and smog has caused disruptions on various sections of the National Highway across the province.

On Saturday, the M-2 motorway from Lahore to Kot Sarwar, the Lahore-Sialkot motorway, and the M-4 from Pindi Bhattian to Abdul Hakim were all currently closed due to fog and smog.

“With the closure of major routes, there was an unusual load of traffic within the city,” the CTO stated, emphasising the need for vigilance. To enhance visibility and reduce risks, all traffic officers have been instructed to use reflectors and flasher lights.
