Lahore High Court has hinted at implementing measures to combat the severe smog engulfing the city, suggesting a policy of two work-from-home days per week, two school closure days, and a complete shutdown of commercial activities on Sundays.

Justice Shahid Karim, during a hearing on petitions regarding smog mitigation, noted that similar measures were implemented last year. He urged the environmental commission to meet and formulate a decision. Various departments submitted reports during the hearing.

The court also directed a crackdown on heavy vehicles emitting smoke in and around Lahore, calling for checks on buses at terminals and for motorway police to inspect vehicle fitness. The court expressed reservations about the “Green Lockdown” policy, suggesting it might simply shift pollution from one area to another, rendering it less effective.

Justice Karim remarked that last year’s successful strategy involved two work-from-home days, school closures on Friday and Saturday, adjusted market hours, and a complete Sunday shutdown of commercial activities. He indicated a return to such measures may be necessary.

The Lahore Development Authority (LDA) lawyer reported that an inquiry into the city’s 19 underpasses is complete, and responsibility for their maintenance and the prevention of LED light theft has been assigned to the Punjab Highway Authority (PHA).
