SC disposes of petitions challenging constitutional amendment after withdrawal

A three-member bench headed by the chief justice heard the case

The Supreme Court of Pakistan has disposed of petitions challenging a proposed constitutional amendment after the petitioners requested a withdrawal of their petitions.

A three-judge bench, headed by Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa, heard the case.

The petitions were filed by six members of the Bar Council, including Abid Zuberi. Their lawyer, Hamid Khan, appeared before the court and requested the withdrawal of the petitions.

Chief Justice Isa questioned the need for a lawyer solely for the purpose of withdrawing the petitions, noting that Abid Zuberi could have done so himself. The Chief Justice also pointed out that a separate petition with objections was already pending.

Following the lawyer’s confirmation that both petitions were to be withdrawn, the Supreme Court dismissed the cases.

The court’s decision effectively ends the legal challenge to the proposed amendment, at least for now, paving the way for its potential consideration by the parliament.
