The Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) and the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) have reached an agreement to bring forward unified constitutional amendments.

“Consensus can be achieved whether it involves a constitutional court or any bench,” JUI-F chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman said at a press conference in Islamabad after meeting with a delegation led by PPP chief Bilawal Bhutto Zardari on Friday.

He emphasised that voting on the constitutional amendments can only take place once there is mutual agreement on the proposed changes.

It was agreed that a consensus draft would be prepared based on the PPP’s proposed legislation, after which consultations with the PTI and other parties would take place. “The aim is to involve all parties in the process.”

Fazl stated that copies of the draft were distributed by the government earlier in the day, noting that there was no previous draft available. He mentioned discussions with Bilawal, emphasising a mutual agreement to present a unified draft, as there were objections to an earlier proposal.

The religiopolitical leader suggested that presenting the new draft after addressing the objections would be “more effective” and that any “contentious elements” need to be removed. He expressed hope for progress on the matter, adding that they aim to repeal the 19th Constitutional Amendment and restore the 18th Constitutional Amendment.

He urged the government to recognise that their stance has garnered public support.

“A fundamental principle must be established: our amendment is not for any individual. Please do not divide the judiciary in this manner. Whether before or after October 25, it makes no difference; consensus can be reached within the constitutional bench or court. The aim is to first agree on the draft with the PPP and then engage with the PTI,” he said.

When asked, he stated that the Pashtun Tahafuz Movement (PTM) and its leadership called for a jirga, which was marred by violence.

“There were injuries among the participants, and we condemn these violent actions. We still do not understand why this movement was banned. Such actions are undemocratic, and there should be no violence against unarmed individuals,” he said.

The JUI-F chief clarified that his party members could participate in the jirga and it would send a delegation to represent the party. “We call for compensation for those who have been martyred and for the treatment of the injured.”
