The Punjab government has announced the imposition of Section 144 in Rawalpindi for a duration of eight days, from October 10 to 17, in preparation for the upcoming Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit.

As part of this measure, over 30 wedding halls in the city will be closed for five days, specifically from October 12 to 16.

This decision follows the earlier enforcement of Section 144 in eight cities across Punjab, including Multan, Sahiwal, Sargodha, Gujranwala, Vehari, Pakpattan, Okara, and Wazirabad, where it was implemented for three days.

The official notification prohibits all forms of political gatherings, protests, rallies, and similar activities in Rawalpindi during this period. Additionally, restrictions will be placed on double riding and aerial firing, with bans on pigeon flying, drone usage, and laser light displays under Section 144.

A spokesperson for the Punjab Home Department stated that the decision was made at the request of the district administration to maintain peace and ensure the safety of lives and property. Law enforcement representatives will be exempt from these restrictions.

The SCO summit is set to take place in Islamabad on October 15 and 16, drawing significant attention and requiring heightened security measures.

In response to the wedding hall closures, affected owners have expressed their concerns, noting that many have existing bookings and events planned for what is typically a peak season. They have appealed to the administration for leniency, highlighting the impact of previous protests on their businesses.
