The Met Office has released its monthly outlook for October, predicting near-normal rainfall alongside slightly above-average temperatures. This combination is likely to contribute to increased smog formation in urban areas across the country.

However, regions such as Gilgit-Baltistan, Kashmir, and parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa are expected to receive slightly below normal rainfall.

Temperatures nationwide are anticipated to remain slightly elevated, particularly in Gilgit-Baltistan and western Balochistan. The warm and humid conditions could facilitate dengue larvae breeding, raising public health concerns.

In upper glaciated areas, rising temperatures present an alarming risk for Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs) in vulnerable locations.

Additionally, the forecast indicated potentially isolated showers accompanied by hail and windstorms, which may disrupt the harvesting activities of Kharif crops.

As air quality declined, the risk of smog formation in the plains was heightened. The combination of near-normal rainfall and above-average temperatures is expected to exacerbate smog conditions in urban centers.

On a positive note, the near-normal rainfall is projected to provide sufficient water for standing crops and vegetables, supporting healthy growth and maintaining yield levels throughout the month.
