Strong relations with Shehbaz govt, want Pakistan to succeed: Donald Lu
US Assistant Secretary of State Donald Lu has expressed optimism about further enhancing the strong relationship between the United States and the government led by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.
In an interview with ARY News on Tuesday, Lu reflected on the current state of relations with the Sharif administration, stating, “We have a very strong relationship with Shehbaz Sharif’s government. We have a strong bond with the Pakistani people and look forward to strengthening it year after year.”
Regarding Pakistan’s economic situation, he noted that the US is “very encouraged” by the country’s ongoing economic recovery. He mentioned a meeting with Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb, who shared details about the “serious plans and reforms” being implemented by the federal government.
Just a day earlier, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) approved a $7 billion Extended Fund Facility (EFF) for Pakistan, providing crucial support to the nation’s struggling economy.

“These reforms are challenging, but they represent the future of Pakistan. This is how the country will stabilize its economy and progress for the benefit of its youth and all citizens,” Lu stated.
On security matters, particularly concerning increasing cross-border attacks from Afghanistan, Lu emphasized that counter-terrorism efforts are being pursued in collaboration with the military and government. He affirmed, “We are here to support. We want Pakistan to succeed. We believe in Pakistan.”
Lu is the diplomat associated with a warning to former Pakistan ambassador to the US, Asad Majeed, which became the basis for a cipher sent to Islamabad. This document was used by PTI founder Imran Khan to claim a US conspiracy to remove his government in 2022.
