Gen Asim Malik to be first ‘PhD’ chief of ISI

Gen Malik's doctoral research focused on Pakistan-U.S. relations at NDU

Lieutenant General Muhammad Asim Malik has been appointed the new director-general of Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), becoming the first chief in the agency’s history to hold a PhD.

He will officially take on this role on September 30.

Gen Malik’s doctoral research focused on Pakistan-U.S. relations at the National Defence University, equipping him with valuable insights into the complex dynamics between the two nations.

His appointment was approved by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif following recommendations from the military leadership.

With extensive experience, Gen Malik previously served as adjutant general at the General Headquarters and has commanded infantry divisions in Balochistan and led operations in Waziristan.

He is known for his strong relationship with Chief of Army Staff Gen Asim Munir and has previously turned down significant postings, indicating his close ties within military circles.

Gen Malik succeeds Lt-Gen Nadeem Anjum, who has held the position since November 2021. His military credentials include the prestigious Sword of Honor from the Pakistan Military Academy and specialized training in the U.S. and the UK, providing him with a comprehensive understanding of Western strategic perspectives.
