Pakistan Peoples Party Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari stated on Thursday that establishing constitutional courts was essential for improving the judicial system.

While speaking to lawyers in Islamabad, he acknowledged their significant role in opposing military rule throughout various regimes, emphasising that lawyers “are an asset to the PPP.”

He credited lawyers with providing the country with its Constitution and noted that their struggle was instrumental in defeating General Musharraf’s dictatorship.

While referencing his late mother, Benazir Bhutto, he said: “She used to say that judges who wish to engage in politics should form their own parties.” He recalled that Benazir had advocated for the establishment of constitutional courts at that time.

Bilawal warned that relying on the judiciary for political matters would ultimately damage democracy and harm the public.

He expressed frustration over the lengthy delays in justice, stating, “If I had to wait this long for my grandfather Zulfikar Ali Bhutto’s case, imagine how long the average person has to wait. Will people have to wait 50 years for cases of theft or murder?”

Bilawal noted that 50% of cases in the Supreme Court were constitutional, yet such cases receive 90% of the court’s time. He urged the government and its allies to establish a court system that focuses on “genuine judicial matters” rather than trivial issues like tomato prices or dam construction.
