Federal Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar would hold a press conference on Wednesday (tomorrow) regarding the “26th Constitutional Amendment”. He would be joined by representatives from allied parties.

The press conference aims to inform the media about the “key points” included in the proposed legislation, according to a statement. “The objective is to clarify any ambiguities and present the actual facts.”

Representatives of the federal law minister would also respond to questions from the media at the press conference.

Meanwhile, the Supreme Court Bar Association has convened an emergency meeting of representative lawyer organisations regarding the government’s proposed constitutional amendment package. Invitations have been issued to all lawyer representative organisations.

The meeting is scheduled to take place on Wednesday at 5pm in the auditorium of the SCBA.

Discussions would focus on the government’s proposed constitutional amendments and the bar association would seek clarifications from the government regarding concerns related to these amendments.

The intended legislation is set to propose a fixed three-year tenure for the chief justice of Pakistan.

Although the legislation was initially scheduled to be introduced in the National Assembly and Senate on Monday, the government was unable to present it over the weekend despite intensive efforts to secure the necessary support.

The details of the proposed amendments, which had largely been kept under wraps, were discussed during a special parliamentary committee meeting on Sunday night. The meeting aimed to bring the opposition on board, much to the dismay of both opposition members and government allies.

The PTI has voiced concerns over the lack of a draft presented during the three-hour meeting, claiming the government has made “all possible efforts” to prevent the introduction of the amendment package.

JUI-F votes in Parliament are crucial for the treasury benches in both houses of Parliament as sources within the government have claimed that it has ensured two votes from the opposition.
