A blog published in the Israeli newspaper, Times of Israel has suggested that former prime minister Imran Khan could play a “significant role” in improving relations between Pakistan and Israel.

The blog, written by researcher Aynur Bashirova from Azerbaijan, claimed that Khan has reached out to Israel through the Goldsmith family.

Bashirova highlights how Khan could serve as a “bridge” between the two nations, noting Pakistan’s long-standing support for Palestine. As an Islamic country with strong ties to Muslim nations worldwide, Pakistan’s recognition of Israel was viewed as contradictory to its national identity.

The researcher emphasised that Pakistan’s support for Palestine was not merely a government decision but “deeply rooted” in the hearts of its people. This sentiment has been consistently reflected in the actions of successive governments, which have spoken out against Israeli actions in Palestine, refused official relations with Israel, and advocated for Palestinian freedom at the United Nations.

The blog sheds light on the complexities of Pakistan-Israel relations and the potential for dialogue through influential figures like Imran Khan.

The blog highlights that Khan’s connection to his ex-wife, Jemima Goldsmith, and her family—especially his brother-in-law Zac Goldsmith—has significantly shaped his views on Israel. Zac Goldsmith, a notable figure in pro-Israel and Jewish circles, is believed to have influenced Khan’s perspective on the issue.

The writer suggests that this familial relationship provides Khan with a “unique outlook, potentially making him more amenable to reconsidering Pakistan’s traditional stance on Israel.”

Historically, Pakistan has adopted a firm pro-Palestinian position, consistent with its identity as an Islamic Republic and its commitment to the wider Muslim community. Successive Pakistani governments have condemned Israel’s actions in the Palestinian territories and have consistently rejected establishing diplomatic relations.
