The National Highway Authority (NHA) is currently able to collect just 13% of the toll tax from its highways, according to NHA Chairman Arshad Majeed Mohmand.

This information was shared during a briefing to Federal Minister for Communications, Privatisation, and Board of Investment Abdul Aleem Khan

In response to the situation, Mohmand noted that the NHA is initiating a refinement process based on the minister’s directives.

Khan emphasized the need to eliminate corrupt and inefficient personnel within the NHA and suggested that private sector involvement could address revenue collection challenges.

Khan called for the NHA to establish annual revenue targets to enhance efficiency and revenue generation. He also highlighted the government’s commitment to improving transportation infrastructure, stating that future motorways will have a minimum of six lanes.

Priority projects include the Karachi to Sukkur and Sialkot to Kharian to Islamabad routes.

To maximize revenue, Khan proposed the construction of toll plazas for heavy traffic and stressed the importance of enforcing axle load regulations on highways.

The NHA aims to evolve into a financially stable and independent entity while tapping into global expertise and foreign exchange opportunities.
