Several sections of motorways have been closed for all kinds of traffic as a precautionary step due to smog, the National Highways & Motorway Police (NHMP) said on Friday.

In a series of tweets, the NHMP advised drivers to avoid driving at night and maintain appropriate speed while driving on highways. They also called for using engine oil, break oil, and water before driving.

The M-5 track from Sher Shah to Uch Sharif was closed for traffic as the police diverted the traffic to the Shah Shams Toll Plaza.

Moreover, the M-3 track from Faizpur to Darkhana was also closed and the traffic was diverted to the M-2 link road near Ravi Toll Plaza.

“While driving keep a safe distance with other cars,” police advised drivers and warned that violators of traffic laws would be fined.

On Thursday, the caretaker Punjab government announced that with an improved Air Quality Index, no restrictions were planned for the upcoming weekend.

Last week, the Lahore High Court ordered the closure of all commercial activities in the provincial metropolis by 10pm during the whole week to control smog.
