Barack and Michelle Obama rally DNC crowd in support of Kamala Harris
Former President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama delivered rousing speeches at the Democratic National Convention on Tuesday, urging Americans to back Kamala Harris in her bid for the presidency.
As the first Black president, Obama has thrown his considerable political capital behind Harris, who is seeking to make history as the first woman, first Black, and first South Asian president.
“We do not need four more years of bluster and bumbling and chaos. We have seen that movie before, and we all know that the sequel is usually worse,” Obama told delegates. “America is ready for a new chapter. America is ready for a better story. We are ready for a President Kamala Harris.”
Michelle Obama echoed her husband’s sentiments, cautioning that Trump would try to “distort Harris’ truth” just as he had “everything in his power to try to make people fear us” during the Obamas’ time in the White House.
“His limited and narrow view of the world made him feel threatened by the existence of two hardworking, highly educated, successful people who also happened to be Black,” she said to thunderous applause.
Harris, 59, has ridden a historic wave of momentum, breaking fundraising records and packing arenas with supporters. She joined the convention virtually from a campaign rally in Milwaukee, where she criticized Trump for his stance on abortion rights.

“I do believe, you know, bad behavior should result in a consequence. Well we will make sure he does face a consequence and that will be at the ballot box in November,” Harris said.
The Obamas’ appearances highlighted the high stakes of the 2024 election as Harris seeks to defeat Republican Donald Trump, who defeated Joe Biden in the previous race. Biden, Obama’s former vice president, was forced out of the 2024 contest by Democratic allies who feared he would lose to Trump again.
