Khadijah Shah, renowned fashion designer and founder of Élan, has announced her decision to relinquish her US citizenship to accept a reserved National Assembly seat for women on the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) ticket.

This move comes after Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf offered her the seat, a decision driven by her desire to serve her homeland and contribute to its progress.

Shah says her decision was not an easy one, as she acknowledged the sacrifices involved in leaving behind the security and opportunities of her US citizenship. However, she emphasized her deep connection to Pakistan, stating that it is her “motherland” and the place where she has built her life.

Shah’s decision is also fueled by a sense of purpose ignited by the “unimaginable injustice” she experienced over the past year and a half, following her arrest in connection with the May 9 riots. Though released on bail, she continues to face charges related to the events.

Despite the challenges, Shah expressed her honor in accepting Khan’s offer and her commitment to fulfilling the expectations of her fellow citizens.

Until her dual nationality issue is resolved, she has nominated Mehrunnisa Sajjad, an Oxford University graduate and barrister, to represent her.

Shah praised Sajjad’s dedication to advocating for marginalized communities and her embodiment of the potential every Pakistani woman possesses. She believes Sajjad shares her passion for fighting for the rights of the underprivileged, establishing genuine democracy, and driving progress in Pakistan.

Shah’s entry into politics marks a significant shift for the designer, who is now poised to utilize her platform and influence to contribute to the political landscape of her country.
