Representative Mark Takano has become the latest Democrat to publicly call for President Joe Biden to withdraw from the 2024 presidential race, adding his voice to a growing chorus of party members who believe a change in leadership is necessary.

Takano, in a statement released on Saturday, explicitly endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris as Biden’s successor, arguing that she is best equipped to meet the demands of a modern campaign and can seamlessly transition into the role of Democratic nominee.

The call for Biden to step aside has intensified following the recent Democratic debate, where concerns about the president’s age and ability to defeat former President Donald Trump in the upcoming election were amplified.

Several Democrats have openly supported Harris as a potential replacement, highlighting her experience as vice president and arguing that she is better positioned to challenge Trump in the 2024 race.

While some Democrats have expressed discomfort with the topic, others have advocated for an open nomination process should Biden decide to withdraw. Representatives Angie Craig, Nancy Pelosi, Zoe Lofgren, and Greg Landsman have all voiced support for a competitive primary.

Other Democrats who support Harris include Betty McCollum, Jared Huffman, Marc Veasey, Chuy Garcia, Mark Pocan, Kathy Castor, Hakeem Jeffries, Jim Clyburn, Jared Golden, Adam Schiff, Peter Welch, Elizabeth Warren.

According to Politico, if Biden endorses Harris, Democratic delegates are not obligated to follow his lead. The majority of delegates are pledged to vote for Biden, but they ultimately have the power to choose the party’s nominee.
