Trump attack investigation: Here is what we know so far
The Federal Bureau of Investigation has officially stated that the attack on former US President Donald Trump was an assassination attempt. The gunman, now dead, has also been identified.
The shooting left one attendee dead and two others critically injured. All three were adult men, but their identities have not been publicly shared. Meanwhile, Trump has received medical attention and has made a statement.
President Joe Biden, who was in Delaware at the time, flew back to the White House early Sunday morning to continue being briefed by law enforcement. Biden said he had spoken with Trump and publicly condemned the shooting.
Here is what the investigation has revealed so far
Gunman Identified:
- The FBI identified the gunman as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks, who lived in Bethel Park, Pennsylvania.
- Crooks was killed at the scene by Secret Service agents.
- Public records show Crooks was registered to vote as a Republican, but made a small donation to a Democratic-aligned group in 2021.
Trump’s Status:
- A spokesperson said Trump is “fine” and the Secret Service said he was safe.
- Trump said on social media that he was hit by a bullet in the “upper part of my right ear.”
- Trump flew back to Newark, New Jersey in the early hours of Sunday morning.
Investigation:
- Multiple federal and state agencies are investigating the incident, including looking into how the shooter accessed the location and what weapon was used.
- The FBI has asked the public to submit any information, photos or videos related to the shooting.
Authorities stated it is still an active investigation and they do not currently believe there are any additional existing threats, but it is too early to conclusively say it was a lone wolf attack.
