Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif would launch solar panels distribution in the province from August 14, the Independence Day, according to a statement.

Earlier this week, the provincial cabinet decided that people using up to 200 units could get free solar panels under the “Roshan Gharana” programme while those using up to 500 units would receive solar panels on a 10 per cent payment. The Punjab government would pay 90 per cent of the total amount for solar panels.

The interest-free loan would be provided to power consumers on a five-year instalment plan. Methodology regarding solar panels distribution to people had been settled, it added.

People’s electricity bills would be reduced by 40 per cent after installing solar panels, the Punjab CM said.

“It is my sole mission to provide maximum relief to people. Despite difficult circumstances, we are standing with the people and will continue to do so,” Maryam said.

This comes three days after the Punjab government announced a comprehensive plan to distribute free solar panels based on their electricity consumption and offer subsidised loans for solar installation.

According to the announcement made by her on July 5, consumers using up to 200 units of electricity per month would be provided free solar panels whereas consumers using between 200 to 500 units per month would be offered interest-free loans for solar panel installation.
