Rainfall, thunderstorms anticipated in various areas of Pakistan today
Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) have warned of the potential for thunderstorms and heavy rains across several provinces of Pakistan today. The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Islamabad, Punjab, northeastern Balochistan, and Azad Kashmir regions are all expected to see rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms.
The coastal areas of Sindh province are also forecast to experience light showers.
Karachi has been overcast with intermittent light rain and drizzle for the past three days, though the clouds have not fully opened up to pour heavily.
Significant damage has been reported due to the rains in Balochistan and Punjab.
Lahore witnessed record-breaking rainfall yesterday, leading to waterlogging in multiple areas of the city. The 30-year rainfall record was broken, putting citizens’ lives at risk. The heavy water accumulation has disrupted transportation and severely impacted industrial and commercial activities. Many residents have been confined to their homes.
Given the potential for more intense and torrential rains in Karachi and across Sindh, the relevant authorities have been placed on high alert. There are concerns about the risk of flash floods in Karachi, as the city’s drainage system is clogged with trash, which could cause the sewers to overflow rapidly if heavy downpours occur.
