Pakistan political party Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has suspended PTI leader Sher Afzal Marwat’s membership after a meeting between party founder Imran Khan in Adiala Jail.

“A formal statement would be issued on Friday (today) in this regard,” the party sources added.

PTI officials claimed that Marwat had been constantly violating party discipline over the past month, making several statements criticizing party leaders.

In one particular statement, he allegedly made “derogatory remarks” about the party founder, Imran Khan.

During the meeting with Khan, it was agreed that no leader is above the party, and all other leaders would face the same fate if they crossed the party line.

Marwat was previously removed from the PTI’s core and political committees in May by the party’s Secretary General, Omar Ayub Khan, on the orders of Imran Khan.

PTI distances itself from Marwat’s allegation against Saudi Arabia

This came after Marwat made controversial statements alleging the involvement of Saudi Arabia in the ouster of Imran Khan as Prime Minister through a no-confidence motion in April 2022.

Marwat, known for stirring controversies, had accused both the United States and Saudi Arabia of conspiring to topple the PTI government. While the party had publicly distanced itself from his remarks, Marwat had stood by his claims.

Additionally, Marwat had also criticized the party’s top leadership for depriving him of the chairmanship of the Public Accounts Committee.

He had alleged that Senate Opposition Leader Shibli Faraz was the person who informed Imran Khan about the Saudi ambassador raising reservations regarding Marwat’s nomination for the apex parliamentary committee.
