Imran Khan tasks Arif Alvi to facilitate dialogue amid low show on May 9 anniversary
Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief Imran Khan has entrusted former president Arif Alvi with a significant responsibility aimed at resolving critical matters through dialogue.
English language daily Dawn said the decision comes as the PTI failed to mobilize large-scale public gatherings across the country to mark one year since May 9 violence that followed Imran Khan’s arrest.
During a press conference held outside Adiala jail, where they met with the former prime minister, PTI leaders including Omar Ayub, Arif Alvi, and spokesperson Raoof Hasan revealed that Imran Khan had assigned Alvi an “important” task.
While the specific details of Alvi’s assignment were not disclosed, it is worth noting that Alvi had previously made efforts to bridge the gap between Imran Khan and the military establishment during his tenure as the head of state.
Alvi emphasized the need for dialogue, acknowledging that the political parties aligned with the ruling coalition held limited actual power.
When questioned about the PTI’s decision to engage with parties other than those currently in power, Alvi hinted at the influence wielded by certain entities in Pakistan.

He also stated that the PTI would not engage in talks with the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), and the Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P), citing their alleged involvement in manipulating the mandate.
The PTI took action to address internal matters by removing Sher Afzal Marwat, a prominent member, from the core committee and political committee.
Marwat’s expulsion was aimed at improving relations with Saudi Arabia, as he had previously claimed that the Saudi Crown Prince played a role in the ousting of the PTI’s founder.
Imran Khan directed Marwat to adhere to the party’s policies, and the decision was made to counter the strained relations caused by Marwat’s misleading statements.
In response to the PTI’s call for peaceful demonstrations on May 9, PTI supporters staged small gatherings in various parts of the country, including Karachi, Lahore, and Peshawar.
However, these demonstrations were quickly disrupted by the police, resulting in the detention of several PTI workers.
Despite the limited success of these protests, the PTI demanded the immediate release of Imran Khan, his wife Bushra Bibi, and other PTI workers.
