Former Loose Women host Denise Welch has claimed that Meghan Markle refused to be “run by ‘men in grey suits’” during her time as a member of the British royal family.

Welch commented that Meghan, who married Prince Harry in 2018, was disliked by the public due to her outspoken nature and advocacy for issues like equality for women of color.

The actress-turned-TV personality suggested there were racist undertones to the public’s perception of Meghan.

“I think there was racism involved in it, of course there was, like when Princess Diana was with Dodi Fayed. The same sort of thing, they don’t want [it],” Welch said.

She clarified that she was referring to the “people who look after the royal family” rather than the actual royal family.

Welch explained that even before marrying Harry, Meghan had been “in those rooms” advocating for causes she believed in, such as speaking out for women of color and equality at the United Nations.

This, according to Welch, likely did not sit well with the “men in grey suits” who wanted to control the narrative around the royal family.

The report notes that Meghan’s outspoken nature and progressive views were seen as a threat, especially in comparison to the more reserved public persona of her sister-in-law, Kate Middleton. Meghan’s refusal to be “run by” the palace advisors is cited as a key reason for the public backlash she faced during her time as a working royal.
