At least 17 Palestinians were killed overnight in separate Israeli airstrikes targeting the Nuseirat and Bureij refugee camps in the Gaza Strip.

The attacks occurred despite the Israeli military’s announcement of a “pause” in fighting to facilitate the delivery of humanitarian aid during the Eid ul Adha holiday.

In the Bureij camp’s Block 3, one person was killed and several others wounded when a house was hit. Similarly, in Nuseirat, another person was killed and multiple individuals injured by Israeli air raids.

The latest violence comes amidst an ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas militants in Gaza that has raged since an October 2023 attack by Hamas that resulted in the deaths of 1,200 Israelis.

Since the start of the conflict, at least 37,347 Palestinians have been killed and 85,372 others wounded due to the Israeli bombardment of the Gaza Strip. Additionally, the Gaza media office reported that the number of journalists killed has risen to 151.

The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) also stated that 193 of its staff members have been killed - the highest death toll for the UN in its history.

Despite Israel’s claim of a “pause” in fighting, residents and medical workers in Gaza reported that the Israeli attacks had persisted on Monday, with the army even burning down the departure hall at the Rafah border crossing.

Hamas condemned the destruction of the Rafah crossing facilities as a “criminal act and barbaric behavior” within the ongoing “genocide against the Palestinian people in Gaza.”

The relentless Israeli offensive has drawn international condemnation, with the Jewish state facing cases at the International Criminal Court and the International Court of Justice.

Its key ally, the United States, has continued to stonewall efforts to hold Israel accountable under international law.
