ECP accepts PMLN’s plea to change Islamabad tribunal
The Election Commission of Pakistan accepted pleas filed by three Members of National Assembly belonging to the Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz to transfer petitions against their victory to a new tribunal.
A four-member bench led by Chief Election Commissioner Sikander Sultan Raja announced the verdict that was reserved last Friday.
The bench accepted pleas filed by Khurram Nawaz, Anjum Aqeel and Tariq Fazal Chaudhry, who had maintained that the tribunal was not impartial. All three were elected from Islamabad.
The tribunal was headed by Justice Tariq Mahmood Jahangiri of the Islamabad High Court.
Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s Ali Bukhari, Shoaib Shaheen and Amir Mughal had asked ECP to reject the petitions.
In the last hearing, Faisal Chaudhry said that the Election Commission does not have the authority to change or review the tribunal.
The tribunal was hearing complaints filed by the PTI regarding alleged malpractices in counting of votes.
