The Embassy of Russia in Islamabad has stated that it was ‘closely following’ the developments in Pakistan, including the political situation and court decisions.

“However, we believe that it is up to the Pakistani people to react to and comment on these developments,” the embassy said in an X post on Tuesday.

The embassy did not mention any context of the post. Some of the users in the comments linked it to the legal battle of former prime minister Imran Khan while a few were “astonished” to see such a statement from the official social media account of the Russian embassy.

On Monday, Khan and his party leader Shah Mahmood Qureshi got major relief when the Islamabad High Court acquitted them in the allegedly leaking state secrets case.

The cipher case pertains to a diplomatic document that reportedly went missing from Khan’s possession. The PTI alleges that the document contained a threat from the United States to oust Imran from office because of his stance on Russia.

The US administration has rebuffed such allegations. Later, Khan retracted from his allegations and blamed the former army chief for his ouster from the office.

Moreover, the case of reserved seats is also before the Supreme Court. The case has been adjourned till June 24. The Sunni Ittehad Council, the new home of PTI-backed candidates, wants allotment of reserved seats in assemblies for women and minorities.

It merits here to mention that Russia had accused the United States of interfering in the internal affairs of Pakistan when Khan was ousted from his office in 2022.

The Russian foreign ministry’s spokesperson had alleged that the US punished Khan for being “disobedient” by taking a visit to the Kremlin.

In its post, the Embassy of Russia in Pakistan also urged people to only follow its official social media pages.

“Please note that the official pages of the Embassy of Russia on social media platforms are the only credible source of information on our Ambassador’s engagements and activities,” it said.
