A couple, who recently cleared Pakistan’s highest civil service exam on their first attempt, has aimed to address the country’s two most critical issues: increasing revenue collection and maintaining peace.

“My husband is now in the police and I am in the IRS. He will ensure security and peace by ending crime and I will ensure prosperity by resolving the revenue collection issue,” she said in an interview with Aaj News.

Dr Hajra Niaz and her husband Huzaifa Mughal, cleared the Central Superior Services 2023 exam.

Huzaifa was allocated in the Police Service of Pakistan and Dr Hajra in the Inland Revenue Services.

Pakistan’s tax-to-GDP ratio fell from 10.4pc in 2017-18 to 8.5 per cent in 2022-23, far below the Asia and Pacific average of 19.8%. Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb has vowed to broaden the tax base to improve the economy and ensure that the country does not seek more loans from the International Monetary Fund.

Moreover, the country is also dealing with a fresh surge in terrorism activities in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan. Karachi has also seen an increase in street crimes.
