University of Karachi to award honorary doctorate to Iran’s President Raisi

The University of Karachi has decided to award an honorary doctorate, PhD, to Iran’s President Ebrahim Raisi during his visit to Sindh’s provincial capital on April 23 (Tuesday).

Sindh Governor Kamran Tessori, who is also the university’s chancellor, requested conferring the degree on the Iranian president.

He approved the decision in the syndicate’s meeting on Saturday. In a statement, UoK Vice Chancellor Khalid Iraqi said that a special ceremony would be organised for awarding the degree.

Tessori would award the honorary doctorate to Iran’s president. Raisi is the first head of state to visit Pakistan after the formation of the new government.

It will be a public holiday in the city on Tuesday, according to a notification issued by the administrator. All the government and private offices, educational institutions (public/private), will remain closed except the essential services and officials involved in emergency duties.

Moreover, the government has also announced its decision to take one of the top hotels in the city, Movenpick, under its control for three days.

The hotel management has cancelled all bookings during the three days and added that all shops will remain closed.

Last month, the varsity named the new building of the School of Law after Dawoodi Bohra community leader Dr Syedna Mufaddal Saifuddin.

He and caretaker Sindh Chief Minister Justice (retd) Maqbool Baqar had inaugurated the building during his visit to the city in November last year.

“The inauguration of the building marks an onerous significant contribution by the Bohra Jamaat to the field of education,” the interim Sindh CM had said while addressing the ceremony.
