Alleged killer of Indian spy Sarabjit Singh succumbs to gunshot wounds in Lahore

Sources within police, family say Amir Sarfaraz, alias Tamba, was receiving threats

An alleged killer, Amir Sarfraz alias Tamba, of Indian spy Sarabjit Singh succumbed to gunshot wounds after unidentified men opened fire at him in Lahore on Sunday, family and police said.

Tamba was receiving threats, according to the family and police. Operations SSP Ali Raza has claimed that they have found “very important evidence” that they would soon brought to the media.

The law enforcement agencies have started an investigation into the murder. The body was moved to a hospital in the Cantt area.

“Strict action should be taken against unidentified men,” the first information report registered at the Islampura Police Station stated. The FIR was registered on the complaint of the victim’s brother under Section 324 (attempt to commit qatl-i-amd) of the Pakistan Penal Code.

In 2018, an additional district and sessions judge acquitted Tamba and Mudassir Munir of the murder of Singh in Central Jail, Kot Lakhpat. The two were accused of killing the Indian spy in captivity by attacking him with bricks and iron rods in 2013. At the time of the incident, the accused were in jail after their conviction in another criminal case.

The court acquitted the two for lack of evidence and due to the resiling of prosecution witnesses.

Earlier, India Today while quoting sources reported that Tamba was assassinated by two unknown men in Punjab’s capital. The news outlet identified him as a close associate of the banned Lashkar-e-Taiba founder.

The victim’s brother stated that he was in the lower portion of the house while his older brother was in the upper portion. “The main door of the house was open,” it said and added that the suspects one of the suspects was wearing a face mask while the other wore a helmet.

“Tamba was alone in his room and the unidentified men opened fire at him,” it said and added that he was “shifted to an ambulance for treatment.”

According to him, one of the suspects was 26 years old and another was 24 years old.

Later, sources within the police claimed that Tamba succumbed to the gunshot wounds.

Singh was a convicted Indian spy. He was arrested on charges of carrying out four bombings in Faisalabad, Multan and Lahore which killed 14 Pakistani citizens. He was later sentenced to death.

Earlier this month, a Guardian report claimed that the Indian government assassinated individuals in Pakistan as part of a wider strategy to eliminate terrorists allegedly living on foreign soil.

The British newspaper report while quoting interviews with intelligence officials in both countries and documents shared by Pakistani investigators stated how India’s foreign intelligence agency allegedly began to carry out assassinations abroad in view of national security after 2019.

Such claims relate to almost 20 killings since 2020, carried out by unidentified gunmen in Pakistan.
