The federal government has announced that a commission of inquiry will probe the allegations levelled by six Islamabad High Court judges, who wrote a letter to the chief justice of Pakistan earlier this week.

An impartial retired judge would lead the one-member commission, Law Minister Azam Nazir Tarar told a press conference on Thursday, shortly after Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif met with CJP Qazi Faeaz Isa.

He said the notification on the formation of the inquiry commission will be issued within two or four days after deciding its TORs (Terms of Reference) at a cabinet meeting.

In response to a question, Tarar said he strongly believed the commission should also investigate the allegation that court verdicts against PMLN in 2017-2018 were the result of interference in the judiciary.

Tarar, however, refused to respond to the question of whether the judges had committed a ‘misconduct’ by writing the letter. It was a matter for the judiciary to decide internally, he said.

He said there would be no compromise on the independence of the judiciary.

Tarar said the prime minister believed there should be no inference in the working of institutions.

He said the letter was widely circulated on mainstream and social media.
