PPP bags four Senate seats, PMLN and JUIF get on each
The PPP bagged four seats in the Senate election held on Thursday, while PMLN and JUIF won one seat each, according to the results declared shortly after the voting ended.
ECP held bye-elections for six Senate senate that fell vacant after some of the Senators resigned having won constituencies in the national and provincial assemblies.
National Assembly members voted in the election of one Senate seat while Sindh Assembly members cast their ballots to elect two Senators and Balochistan Assembly members elected three Senators.
MPs from JI and MQMP boycotted the vote.
Yousaf Raza Gilani won the Senate seat from Islamabad effortlessly, after securing 204 votes. His rival, SIC’s Ilyas Mahirban, could win 88 votes.
From Sindh, PPP’s Aslam Abro and Saifullah Dharejo were elected senators having secured 57 and 58 votes, respectively.
SIC’s Nazirullah and Shazia Sohail could get only four votes each.
In Balochistan, PPP’s Mir Abdul Quddus Bizenjo was elected Senator, and so were PMLN’s Mir Dostain Khan Domki, and JUIF’s Abdul Shakoor.
The polling continued from 9 am to 4 pm.
The seats became vacant after the resignations of Yousaf Raza Gilani, Sarfaraz Bugti, Abdul Ghafoor Haideri, Nisar Khoro, Jam Mehtab and Prince Ahmad Omar.
