French Daily newspaper, Liberation, published a cartoon apparently mocking hungry people of Gaza in the holy month of Ramadan.

The cartoon named “Ramadan in Gaza – The Start of a Fasting Month” was produced by French cartoonist Corinne Rey.

This drawing was heavily criticized by people on social media as it was sneering towards the victims of Israel’s operation, widely referred to as genocide.

The cartoon depicts a ruined city with a hand jutting out remains. Besides this, a woman sitting on the street with a malnourished boy thwarted a man chasing two mice by stating ‘not before sunset.’

The image showcased destruction around the people.

The cartoon left many social media users angry due to the insults on the Gazan people for being deprived of the necessities of life.

For famine to be declared, at least 20% of the population must be suffering extreme food shortages, with one in three children acutely malnourished and two people out of every 10,000 dying daily from starvation or from malnutrition and disease.

In late December, the IPC said the situation in Gaza had already been exceeded the 20% threshold.

It said the remaining two thresholds - the number of children acutely malnourished and the number of people dying daily from starvation or from malnutrition and disease - “may also be breached at some point” in the coming months.

“There is a risk of famine in the projection period through May 2024 if the current situation persists or worsens,” it said.

The United Nations said in February that more than a quarter of Gaza’s 2.3 million people were “estimated to be facing catastrophic levels of deprivation and starvation.” It said without action widespread famine could be “almost inevitable.”
