People in Pakistan have more mentally healthy compared to people from India, United Kingdom and Australians, a new report has revealed.

The report, titled Mental State of the World, was developed by Sapien Labs and was published on March 1 this year.

It is based on 419,175 responses from 71 countries and developed a unit called Mental Health Quotient (MHQ) to make a comparative analysis of the countries in the study. Higher average MHQ indicates better mental health among members of the population.

According the the report, Dominican Republic’s average MHQ of 91 is highest in the world followed by Sri Lanka (89) and Tanzania (88).

Out of the 71 countries studied, Uzbekistan (48), United Kingdom (49) and South Africa (50) make up the lowest three,

According to the report, Pakistan ranks 56 out of the total 71 countries in the study with an average MHQ of 60.

India ranks only a point lower than Pakistan with an MHQ of 59 while Australia (54) and Brazil (53) are also ranked lower than Pakistan.

The MHQ measures 47 aspects of mental capability but makes sure it is calculated within a person’s own particular context.

“For one person this may mean being able to carry out a particular type of knowledge work, while for another it may mean managing a household or performing physical labor. Furthermore, each person will have in their own mind what appropriate functioning looks like,” report added.

The MHQ also takes into account demographics, lifestyle factors, friend and family dynamics, and traumas and adversities.

Respondents were asked to provide information in an anonymous onine survey that takes about 15 minutes to complete.
