Chief of Army Staff General Syed Asim Munir on Wednesday lauded the brave efforts of Gulberg Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Syeda Shehrbano Naqvi to rescue a woman from a violent mob, the Inter-Services Public Relations said in a statement.

ASP Naqvi called on COAS Munir at General Headquarters in Rawalpindi where he heaped praised on ASP Naqvi for her devotion to duty and professionalism in diffusing a volatile situation, it added

Viral videos had shown multiple police officials including Dolphin Squad members seen on the Ichra Bazar in Lahore after a mob surrounded a woman for wearing a dress with Arabic calligraphy on it.

ASP Naqvi was then seen reasoning with the crowd after which she escorted the woman out of the shop with an arm around her.

“The fearless officer extricated a woman from the difficult milieu of Ichhra Bazaar in Lahore on February 26,” according to ISPR.

Acknowledging the role of Pakistani women in all walks of life, COAS Munir said that Pakistani women have distinguished themselves at home and abroad since independence through their talent and commitment.

“Women are an invaluable part of Pakistan’s society and their respect is enshrined in our religion as well as our social ethos,” COAS Munir said.

The army chief also underscored the importance of social harmony and the need for nationwide consensus on curbing intolerance.

He emphasised on the rule of law and advised against taking the law in hands when legal avenues are available for addressing concerns and grievances.

Arbitrary actions based on heresy undermine the outlook of the society, COAS Munir said while underlining Islam’s eternal message of kindness and benevolence.

It is pertinent to mention that ASP Naqvi has been recommended for the Quaid-e-Azam Police Medal by the Punjab Police for her efforts.
