Karachi YouTubers jailed for blackmail, extortion
An anti terrorism court in Karachi has handed a 5-year sentence the owner of a YouTube channel and reporter for blackmailing and extorting the owner of a medical clinic in the city.
The court in its judgment sent the convicts, who were released on bail, to jail and also directed them to pay fine of Rs10,000 each.
In its judgment, the court mentioned that the prosecution has proved its case against the reporter Waseem Abbasi Hashmi and Baqa News Channel’s owner in a case filed on the complain of Arif Solangi in 2022.
According to details, Solangi filed a first information report in November 2022 in which he claimed that the two YouTubers arrived at his clinic located at Ayesha Manzil.
Hashmi along with the cameraman recorded videos and threatened him of closing the complainant’s business if he failed to make a deal with them and demanded Rs300,000, the FIR stated.
According Solangi, he then visited the office of the YouTube channel located in Gulsha-e-Iqbal where he met its owner Muzzamil Shaikh and was made to pay a total of Rs150,000 through Easy Paisa.
The court said found the two guilty of the crime and stated that they failed to discharge the case against them.
It went on to add that the convicts would spend another six months in prison in case they defaulted on their fines.
