Ishaq Dar cleared in assets beyond means case
Former Finance Minister Ishaq Dar was cleared of all charges in an assets beyond means case by an accountability court in Islamabad on Monday.
Judge Muhammad Bashir announced the reserved verdict on Monday afternoon.
In the proceedings, the National Accountability Bureau’s prosecutor told the court that no evidence of corruption had been found against Dar.
However, the judge had asked the prosecution to submit a written reply, remarking that NAB might change its viewpoint later.
The case had been opened after the Supreme Court struck down amendments to the NAB law made by the previous government.
The SC decision had ordered that all cases closed after the NAB amendments should be reopened, since the amendments were against the constitution.
However, Dar’s lawyers had told the court that he had actually been acquitted by the court and had not benefited from the NAB amendments.
Dar’s lawyer had also argued in previous hearings that no evidence of corruption had been found against his client. The statement was backed by NAB’s prosecutor in Monday’s hearing before the verdict was announced.
