A two-day Japanese film festival began in Karachi on Thursday with the screening of Dad’s Lunch Box—a film on father and daughter bonding.

The event is being organised by the Karachi Arts Council of Pakistan with the joint cooperation of the Japan Consulate. Three were screened on the first day of the festival.

Masakazu Fukatsu directed the movie, Dad’s Lunch Box, is a 2017 film inspired by a real-life story of a Japanese father who for three years prepared daily bento lunch boxes for his daughter who was studying at high school. The turn of events shows how he tries new food items and the time his daughter graduates from school.

“I have a flight to Houston in the morning. I just came because of Japan. Japanese film festivals are like a dream. The festival is a breath of fresh air in such a situation,” writer Anwar Maqsood said at the event.

Maqsood shared that he was a fan of Japanese directors and added that such language movies were getting Oscars.

The Consul General of Japan stated that he was “very happy” to announce the festival. “Many Pakistanis want to watch Japanese films. Such festivals are very important for both countries. There is an opportunity to learn the culture and language of each other,” he said.

The vice president of Pakistan-Japan Culture Association stated that there was a special tradition of preparing lunch boxes in Japan.

In Japan, the tradition of preparing lunch or ‘bento box’ is very old, but the movie father and daughter’s love won the hearts of the participants.
