Social media users have come to support French footballer Karim Benzema after a political controversy related to the Palestine and Israel war triggered after his social media post in which he expressed solidarity with Palestinians.

Karim posted on X (formally Twitter), “All our prayers for the inhabitants of Gaza who are once again victims of these unjust bombings which spare no women or children.”

However, his sympathising words became controversial when a political official accused him of his connection with a group which France considers a terrorist organization.

Speaking to French outlet CNews on Monday, French Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin accused Benzema of having connections to a religious and political group which France considers a terrorist organization.

However, the allegations triggered a social media war and netizens have decided to stand with Karim. An X user said: “Europe countries talk about freedom of expression as a legitimate right for every individual but it becomes prohibited when it doesn’t align with their interests.”

“It’s time to question the double standards,” shared an X user and added the hashtag #WeStandWithKarimBenzema to support Palestine and the statement of a footballer.

Additionally, they appreciated Karim for his stance on Palestine and believed that he selected the right thoroughfare of standing and telling the truth.

The striker has 97 appearances for France’s men’s national team, scoring 37 goals, and is widely recognized as one of the greatest French players of all time. He retired from international duty last year after making his senior debut in 2007.
