8th October earthquake remembered on 18th anniversary

Events were held across the country on the 18th anniversary of the October 8 earthquake that killed tens of thousands of people in 2005.

In Balakot, which was one of the worst affected areas by the earthquake, a prayer was organised at the mass grave of 63 children.

In Lahore, the Pakistan Disaster Management Authority organised a rally from Nasir Bagh to Town Hall. A spokesperson said that an awareness campaign about natural disasters from October 9 to 13.

In Islamabad, a prayer was held at the Margalla tower, which partially collapsed due to the earthquake.

Almost 90,000 people had died when a 7.6 magnitude earthquake ripped through northern Pakistan on October 8 around 8:52 am in the morning. The deceased included 12,000 students and 1500 teachers as well.

Conservative estimates say that almost 3 million people were affected as a result of the earthquake.
