Shubman Gill has tested positive for dengue fever, casting doubts on his participation in India’s opening match of the ODI World Cup, against Australia in Chennai on October 8, ESPNcricinfo reported on Friday.

The Indian opening batter did not attend India’s training sessions at the Chidambaram Stadium on Wednesday and Thursday, as the Indian team management was hopeful that he will make a recovery.

“He is under the weather,” the official update from the BCCI said. “The medical team is closely monitoring him. We are hoping he gets better soon.”

Gill is the leading run-getter in ODIs this year with 1,230 runs at an average of 72.35 and a strike rate of 105.03. He smashed two centuries and a half-century in his last four outings in ODIs, two of which came against Australia.

In case Gill is unavailable for Sunday’s game, KL Rahul or Ishan Kishan could open in his place with skipper Rohit Sharma.

Pakistan will begin its quest for the cricket World Cup in the second match of the multilateral tournament against the Netherlands today (Friday). The match will take place in Hyderabad and begin at 1:30 pm PST.

A day earlier, the opening game of the World Cup was played between defending champions Englad and runner-ups New Zealand.

The Blackcaps comfortably won by nine wickets as they chased 283 runs target within 37 overs against England at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

Devon Conway and Rachin Ravindra smashed centuries to power New Zealand to the victory over defending champions England in the opening match of the World Cup.
