Karachi’s historical ‘quarters’ to be replaced with new apartments
The caretaker Sindh government has decided to restructure the historical ‘quarters’ area of Karachi. The decades-old buildings allotted to government employees will be demolished and replaced with new apartments.
The caretaker government plans to construct new apartments on the land of Martin Quarters, Jamshed Quarters, Jahangir Quarters and Clayton Quarters.
The decision was taken in an interim cabinet meeting chaired by the caretaker Sindh chief minister, Justice (retd) Maqbool Baqar, where he approved the project under an urban regeneration plan to re-engineer old quarters of Karachi.
The meeting was briefed that the project would be completed with the participation of the World Bank and P&D and that they had already started work on the feasibility of the project.
New apartments to be constructed under the plan will have all essential facilities including a shopping mall, offices, parking lots, libraries, parks and other spaces for education and health.
The caretaker CM said that the project will increase the beauty of the areas.
Some of the said quarters were established before Pakistan came into being.
