After weeks of tensions with Canada over the killing of a Sikh leader, India has conceded that it is open to look into ‘specific’ information over the matter.

The revelation was made by India’s Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar while speaking at the Council of Foreign Relations on Tuesday.

Jaishankar said that India had told Canada that the matter of a Hardeep Singh Nijjar’s murder was ‘not its policy’. However, he then added that evidence can be looked in to.

“One, we told the Canadians that this is not the government of India’s policy,” he said. “Two, we told the Canadians saying that look, if you have something specific, if you have something relevant, you know, let us know - we are open to looking at it.”

The position marks a change on the behalf of New Delhi, which went on a diplomatic offensive when Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau told the House of Commons that there were ‘credible allegations’ that the Indian government could be involved in Hardeep Singh’s murder. Trudeau had described the act as a violation of Canada’s sovereignty.

Canada had expelled an Indian diplomat as well, prompting India to stop issuing visas to Canadians and reduce their diplomatic presence in the country.

However, pressure has been building on India from Canada’s allies, including the US, to cooperate in the investigation.
