Caretaker Information Minister Murtaza Solangi has said that it is likely the petrol price will be brought down in the next fortnight’s review due to a decline in the value of the dollar.

“By taking measures, our government got the dollar cheaper by around Rs35, due to which we could spend less money to buy petrol,” he told reporters at Karachi Press Club on Saturday.

The petroleum products prices are at a record high in the country after the caretaker government increased petrol price by Rs26.02 per litre and high-speed diesel by Rs17.34 on September 16. After the massive hike, the new rate of petrol is Rs331.38. The price of high-speed diesel now stands at Rs329.18.

Responding to a question regarding the general elections, Solangi said that the election date will soon be announced and the interim government will assist the Election Commission in every possible to hold the elections.

“There is some confusion in peoples’ minds [over election] due to our past experience. In this country, people have spent 11 years in power corridor after promising to hold elections in 90 days,” he said.

However, it is some peoples’ business to create confusion, he said, adding that the interim government will do its constitutional duty to conduct elections in the stipulated time announced by the ECP.

Responding to a question regarding the return of PML-N’s Nawaz Sharif, the information minister said that the former prime minister had left the country with the permission of the judiciary and the government of that time.

“He will be treated according to the law of the land. I do not know if he [Sharif] will apply for protective bail nor do I know if the judiciary will decide on the matter,” Solangi said.
