The district and sessions court in Peshawar has convicted a man of desecrating the Holy Quran and sentenced and awarded him life imprisonment.

Additional District and Sessions Judge Muhammad Sher Ali Khan announced the verdict after finding the suspect, Kifayatullah, guilty of the crime.

The suspect was accused of burning Quran inside a mosque in Peshawar, according to the police. The people in the area had arrested the suspect and handed him to the police.

A case was registered against him at the Khazana Police Station. The incident took place in Peshawar’s Garhi Khan Baba area in 2018.

The prosecution said that a challan was submitted to the court after completing the investigation against the suspect.

In July this year, the United Nations Human Rights Council approved a resolution on religious hatred in the wake of the desecration of the Holy Quran in Sweden.

The resolution, introduced by Pakistan on behalf of the 57-nation OIC, called for the UN rights chief to publish a report on religious hatred and for states to review their laws and plug gaps that may “impede the prevention and prosecution of acts and advocacy of religious hatred”.
