ECP will not approach SC over elections: sources
The Election Commission of Pakistan has decided not to approach the Supreme Court of Pakistan over the issue of elections as advised by President Arif Alvi, according to sources.
Sources also said that the ECP does not believe that the president’s letter of September 13 does not merit a response.
However, the ECP believes that the president is free to approach the SC over elections himself.
The ECP reportedly has reservations over the fact that the president only mentioned a date for elections to the National Assembly and not the provincial legislatures. Sources said that ECP thinks that if provincial governors give their own dates for elections, it could lead to a crisis.
The electoral body also believes that President Alvi merely suggested a date and the authority to take a decision lies with the ECP.
The president had written a letter to the chief election commissioner advising that the ECP should ‘seek guidance’ from the Supreme Court to announce a single date for elections across the country.
The president had proposed that elections should be held on November 6 to make sure the 90-day limit under the constitution is adhered to.
