Britain calls for ‘credible, inclusive and transparent’ elections in Pakistan

British High Commissioner Jane Marriott said that she had discussed the importance of free and fair elections in a meeting the Chief Election Commissioner on Wednesday.

Marriott made the statemetnt in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, on Wednesday. She described her meeting with Sikander Sultan Raja as ‘introductory’.

“We agreed that it’s crucial the country sees free, credible, transparent and inclusive elections in line with the law,” she wrote.

Marriott arrived at the Election Commission of Pakistan on Wednesday and met CEC Raja. However, she left without answering questions from reporters gathered outside.

The meeting comes a few weeks after United States Ambassador Donald Blome met Raja at the ECP, hours before the electoral body was due to hold a key meeting on elections.

“Choosing Pakistan’s future leaders is a decision for the Pakistani people to make, and the United States remains committed to working to enhance the US-Pakistan relationship with whomever the Pakistani people choose,” Blome had told Raja during the meeting.

The State Department had recently been asked about the meeting but had refused to comment, directing queries at towards the US embassy in Islamabad.

However, the US spokesperson had clarified that they did not support any particular political party in the country.
